About my design

by Smitty McGillicutty
I drew this little gril one day and thought it would be perfect as gretel, so the idea grew on from there.

too similar to:

http://www.threadless.com/submission/117952/Into_the_Woods

looks like you just removed the creature, altered the trees in some places, slapped in the two kids and submitted it.
13strong
13strong on May 01 '07
xiv - you posted a link to this sub.

Try again? Although, by the sound of things, this is a completely different design - no creature, different trees, and two original and well-illustrated characters added?

thanks for all the comments so far and for all that follow. To address some points:

1) I am totally open to different placements on the shirt, I just chose the bottom because I thought it would give the design more room and since it is very detailed, I kinda wanted it big enough to see all of it.

2) As for the similarity to That Way, I am kinda new to the threadless scene and am really more comfortable designing characters or real traditional life drawing. I could hand draw what I wanted the forest to look like, but when I was trying to stay within the 5 colors AND make the forest allow the characters to stand out, I hit a snag. I did look at a lot of previously made designs, That Way, A Room With a View, Lost a Wheel, and Get Some Fresh Air, to name a few. I didn't copy any of these, but I followed the same techniques and ideas that helped those pieces feel more cohesive. To all of you that feel wronged, just vote accordingly. To the others of you that still believe and understand that art is continually evolving and that any good artist becomes better by learning from those who came before him; please help to teach others on this site the difference between being "inspired" and outright "copying".

or you could resubmit it with a new forest?

Are they lost because they eated all the crumbs that was supposed to be their guide through the woods and thems are fat?

o_O
13strong
13strong on May 02 '07
Maybe this is Hansel and Gretel after they have escaped from the Gingerbread House. They have been fattened up by the witch for eating, but have pushed her into her own oven and made their escape.

But now they find themselves lost, alone, in the woods, defenceless, and on top of it all they're now morbidly obese...
tobasco
tobasco on May 02 '07
This is sweet! The bottom placement doesn't bother me at all, I think its just fine. Sure the trees are similar but there's only so many way's you can vector trees.

I'd like to see the hot dog sword replaced with a red stapler :)

y'all are awesome, if it doesn't win I will look at some different ways of redoing the forest, but yeah...I think fat people are just more interesting to draw, there is more to them.

This is brilliant. I bought 'That Way', but I think this is better.

Less cutesy, more ugly is the way to go.

yes i like this exactly the way it is. That colour will totally not suit me but if it wins im buying it anyway. I agree about it needing to be large to get the detail. I am so in love with their faces!!! And... everything!!!!

btw... this made me laugh outloud. I dont laugh outloud by myself very often... even on threadless!

there is a difference between being inspired and copying, I think the background is more along the copying lines. I think it's far too similar to call it being "inspired". That being said, I think it's a good design and I do think you should rework it and resubmit. I don't feel that this deserves to win because of the similarities to That Way. But good luck in the future, I hope to see more from you.
Smitty McGillicutty
Smitty McGillicutty on May 02 '07
Thank you so much for your criticism jpiatt, I hope to not disappoint with future subs, and like I said, I will rework the forest if it doesn't win, but as for copied as opposed to inspired, I would like to get a better idea of what your criteria is. Personally, after seeing your work, I felt the piece below looks more like a copy of the Hamburger Helper guy than "inspired" by.

it hansel holding a penis or some sort of phallic-shaped instrument?

OMG...the looks on those chubby Augustus Gloop wannabe's faces is amazingly priceless! Well, i can put a price on this design...4$ worth! Man, they Hansel and Gretel look like Meth addicts in the best way possible.
jpiatt
   jpiatt on May 04 '07
Smitty, to be fair...I wasn't "inspired" by another printed design on the one you pointed out. Also, the Hamburger Helper is a pop culture thing that I was clearly mocking in my absolutely non-serious sub that I knew would never have a chance to be printed. I just did it to make myself laugh. And, to be honest I didn't even think of Hamburger Helper till someone pointed it out after I was done with it. I just drew a cartoony glove with eyes and a mouth asking to be fingered...cause...that's what people do to gloves :P

But, enough about my work.
Smitty McGillicutty

zac_layman
zac_layman on May 04 '07
I really like the idea and how the forest is designed onto the shirt, but i don't like the kids as hansel and gretel. I have always pictured Hansel and Gretel as really frail little kids and these kids are sort of chubby.
to you. love sarah.
to you. love sarah. on May 04 '07
how can you even claim it was "inspiration"? those negative space trees are exactly the same only you added more branches! The one to the farthest left side proves that. Even if you did the characters, stealing from another design is not cool. For now, zero, because i dont condone that.

if you fix the forest.. you get a 4 at least. i like those kids... in fact, i think the forest should be way creepier to match their creepiness level
xeonpenguin
xeonpenguin on May 05 '07
ugh. love the design but hate the placement... why do people like this placement??
Willish
Willish on May 05 '07
I read all the comments before I commented and voted myself. I agree it is very much the forest from 'That Way' and thats a shame as the design itself (minus Hansel's in distinguished 'wooden dagger') is well sized, positioned and thought out.

Should I see this design again in the future without the stolen background image it would have a $5.
killerqueen33
killerqueen33 on May 05 '07
these are strangely shaped (and colored) children, but somehow i still kind of like the design. if, as other people have said, the background wasn't so similar to "that way", i would have liked it more
Smitty McGillicutty
Smitty McGillicutty on May 05 '07
alright, like I said, if it doesn't win I will redo the forest and resubmit. Thanks for the comments, if there is anything BESIDES the forest, please feel free. If you are going to comment the same sentiment about the forest over and over again, just remember, I am going to rework it!
lucydough
lucydough on May 05 '07
if you move it up on the shirt I would buy it, however...

Brilliant design and fantastic colors

when you rework the forest, make it as detailed and interesting as the two characters, and it should score well.
