I like the visual, but think it could be stronger without the type.

I think the text is essential, otherwise people might think you are half-empty. However, instead of what you have now maybe just write "optimist" ?

I think the text is necessary for the entire message to translate. The text is just a satirical aid in putting the full meaning behind the vague image of water. Even something like "The Optimist." would work in defining the shirt.

I like it with the text, but i think without it you have to think, and a few seconds later you've worked out the shirt and it's all good :)

I like the idea of using "The Optimist" instead of the text used. Like the text you used as well. Without text, the glass could be half empty!
