I don't really buy that he is eating her but not EATING her - as in fork'n'knife & "please pass the pepper." If that were the case, you wouldn't have had to place the mouth of the octupus right in her crotch, nor given her a facial expression that is "ambiguous." If she were eaten alive in the horror movie (not porn movie) sense, she would probably be looking a little more... um... in pain?
Aside from that, while I usually really dislike the grotesque style of illustration with distorted limbs, for some reason it is really doing it for me in this case. I think partially BECAUSE it has that tentacle-porn sex angle, but she's bottom-heavy and knobby-kneed, and you can see her flesh bulge a little in between the squeezing tentacles. To be honest, I think it's the squeeze-bulges that make me like this piece so much. It's a small thing that makes a big difference, that you paid attention to those little details. That tiny line in the first bulge of the right upper thigh. I couldn't ever actually wear this shirt. But I can't help but score you high for the quality of the art in this sub. |

Although I had the most innocent of intentions with this piece it really doesn't matter because it's all about how the viewer interprets it. If you want to see it as an octopus going to town then thats's great too! I actually kind of like that it turned into something alot more sexual than it is, hopefully it makes people laugh instead of barfing a little in their mouths.

So saying you wouldn't wear something is eminently valid, as Threadless is not in the business of selling paintings, comic books, posters (at least not any more), or anything but art that people will purchase and wear. And it's a tad condescending to say we'd only wear Old Navy. What about Abercrombie and Fitch? ;) |

Amazing shirt and artwork my friend! I would wear this anyday, anytime, anywhere, especially to pick up the ladies and show them that I ain't afraid of no vagina loving, I am the real deal (actually you're the real deal)! Regardless, beautiful artwork - I was in complete shock and awe (just like all your other pieces) when I viewed this Lady Loving Octopus. Hope it gets printed, it would have definitley come in handy the other day when I went to that sushi restaurant! It would be an amazing coincidence to have this similar a layout to the Fisherman's Wife's Dream, just the style is different. HOWEVER, that's 1- public domain these days, and 2- a reference. He reworked it comepletely into his own style. Clearly a lot of work and skill went into it, not just some photoshopping.
I find it interesting that John really doesn't see the sexual connotations in his own or the original. I dislike the feet/hands, but in a way, the more I look at it, the more it tempts me. If it didn't have the reference I probably would have been a lot more... weirded out by it. As is, I'd buy it. definately. I wonder what people would think that says about me? If they've never seen the hokusai. |
